The food was incredible, I really can't describe it....I do remember looking over at Masa in awe. I want to thank you for the awesome service, not only were your descriptions excellent, but you also made me laugh! Miyake and then Sea Dogs, I felt like a lucky girl.

It was a little tough being back in 100 deg. weather, but thankfully I was invited to a party in the the woods. I'm glad I made the 45 min. drive to the middle of nowhere, because it turned out to be a pig roast. Bonus! They had the biggest baddest smoker I've ever seen. (truthfully I've only seen five or so in my lifetime, but this thing was as big as a Geo Metro) I'm not sure I have the tools to describe the barbecue, as my palate is not well versed in the ways of the pig, but I pretty sure you would've thoroughly enjoyed it. (I think the bourbon accompaniment added a lot to the flavor)

This pilgrimage post served as a barbecue primer of sorts for me, and now I feel much better equipped to go out and see what's out there.
You inspired me, and I'm heading out on a pilgrimage of my own this evening, to the BBQ Exchange in Gordonsville, VA. www.bbqex.com
(I don't know how to post links, I've never even commented on a blog)
I'm so EXCITED....and don't worry I called ahead to make sure they'll be open.Susanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12423517485349295755noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3949270802334481269.post-19815371407208663072010-08-07T09:00:51.740-07:002010-08-07T09:00:51.740-07:00Joe, this is the best that I've had,

What kind of rub do they have?ahdhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05739128818613480478noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3949270802334481269.post-73245440906846989852010-08-02T05:35:12.147-07:002010-08-02T05:35:12.147-07:00I've had only a handful of bbq experiences in ...I've had only a handful of bbq experiences in Maine--most of them which revolve around Bucks in Freeport. My first experience, some four or five years ago, was awful--my pork was REALLY dry, completely undressed, and the table sauce was horrific. While I appreciated their attempt at trying to bring a local flavor to the food (read=blueberry bbq sauce), I found it to be awful. There wasn't ANYTHING resembling a NC option.

My second visit to Bucks was a couple of months ago. While food wasn't my primary draw this time, I was very impressed with the smoked sausage I had. I didn't get a chance to try the ribs or the pork, but my co-patriots seemed to like it. I did finger-taste all of their sauces; they were much improved and had a great balance of spice, sweet, and smoke (the all-important trifecta).

I hope this trend of bbq everywhere (even in Maine!) continues. Nothing is as a great as a great slow-cooked, smoked piece of meat, served in a character-rich environment.

I'm excited to get back and try the other establishments. Nice round-up of places I wasn't aware of. If you ever head down south, I suggest you hit Leatha's (where I went to college) http://www.yelp.com/biz/leathas-bar-b-que-inn-hattiesburg
or at the very least, Rendezvous in Memphis. Actually, you can do what I do and order the Rendezvous sauce online, since BBQ is less than amazing in New Orleans. http://www.hogsfly.com/Category.php?category_id=3
Their sauce is amazing, but you have to grill your BBQ- the vinegar in the sauce needs a little smoke to really shine.Shellyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03408929681739560085noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3949270802334481269.post-53070507489086480012010-08-01T16:50:28.070-07:002010-08-01T16:50:28.070-07:00Nice post, Joe.
